Immigration Rallies in Providence

Two groups with opposing views on immigration issues rallied Friday. At left, Terry Gorman, and Rhode Islanders for Immigration Law Enforcement held a protest against proposals for sheltering migrant children in U.S. at the State House Friday afternoon. At left, a group of immigrants rights advocates gathered outside the federal Homeland Security office in Providence Friday morning and urged officials and others to be supportive of the children.

Two groups with opposing views on immigration issues rallied Friday in Providence amid the pending question of whether a state or states will agree to shelter hundreds or thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children from Central America.

“We are here today to stand in solidarity with those children and families who have fled from their countries in Central America, looking to save their lives by escaping the criminal violence in their countries,” Arellano said. She asserted that Mr. Obama has already declared the situation a humanitarian crisis “and we are calling on him to recognize it as the refugee crisis that it is.”
